Computer Speaker Fact Sheet

Even the best computer sound cards can't reach their full potential without good computer speakers. The quality of your speakers and your sound card will determine the richness of sound you hear. Here are the facts on computer speakers to help you make sure your computer system puts out the highest quality sound possible for games, movies and music.
What You Need to Know:

1.

Speaker size: Bigger isn't always better. Computer speakers are typically designed to be as compact as possible. Size is usually not a good indicator of sound quality or output, though. Small, high-quality computer speakers that fit on your desktop can be just as good as full-size tower speakers. Technical specifications are more important than the size of the speaker box. Also, consider the space you have near your computer before deciding on a speaker system.
2.

Wireless or wired? It's not necessary to have a computer speaker with wires. Avoid all the clutter and tangled wires by using wireless speaker components. Some wireless computer speakers operate on battery power while others use electric power and come with AC adapters. With a wireless speaker system, you can use your computer as the central audio system for your home, playing your music wirelessly throughout the house.
3.

Some tasks have more demanding sound requirements. Everyday computer sounds and simple voice recordings don't require a lot of audio power. But if you play games, watch movies and listen to music on your computer, you'll probably not be satisfied with mediocre sound quality from inferior speakers. Most two-piece magnetically shielded computer speakers will be sufficient for basic purposes. If you wish to listen to music and play games or want to use your computer as a home theater center, you'll find a much better sound quality from speaker sets that have three or more pieces and a subwoofer.
4.

Connections can affect sound quality. Computer speakers that connect by USB port will not have the same sound quality as those plugged into a dedicated sound card. If you have a high-quality sound card, take advantage of it by using quality computer speakers and the right connector cables. Computer speakers that are not magnetically shielded can cause interference with monitors and electronic devices placed near them. Also, using high-gauge speaker wire to connect the speakers and using high-definition sound cables (such as HDMI cables) will make sure you receive the high-quality sound your system is capable of.

Many Uses of Computer Speakers

If you see a great deal on computer speakers, then you should probably snatch them up. There are more reasons than just having a computer to have computer speakers. You see, most of the time computer speakers use a headphone jack. That means that you can plug your computer speakers into anything that has a headphone jack. That is about everything.

I see people spend loads of money on specialized MP3 player speakers. The speakers pretend like the only way to listen to your MP3 player through speakers is with such an electronic. That's just not true. If your MP3 player has a headphone jack then you will be able to use pretty much any set of computer speakers to listen to it. So, don't waste your money. Instead, find the best deal you can find on computer speakers and get those. You know, if the opportunity presents itself.

Now, you are probably curious what to look for in a set of computer speakers. Well, that's a good question. There are your garden variety set that are pretty good. They are usually just a set of two pillar-like speakers aren't very big. These will usually put out more sound than you might expect. I would recommend getting a set that comes with a small subwoofer. It might seem silly to get a subwoofer so small, but it will actually do wonders for your sound. If you live in an apartment, this can actually be the perfect size for a subwoofer. You can still get the bass without having to see your neighbor's angry face.

There are a large number of great brands to pick from. Really, any brand is probably going to put out a similar sound. Harmon Kardon has always had a nice line of computer speakers. They put out a better sound than your run of the mill speakers. So, if you find one of these than they might be worth paying a little more to scoop them up. Still, don't break the bank over them. You can usually get them for under $100.

After you get the speakers, make sure you set them to your own listening style. If you think the subwoofer puts out too much bass, you can actually change that. These speakers will usually let you configure them manually by way of dials on the speakers. You can change the audio levels through equalizers on your electronics as well. If you do that you should remember to change them back when you are using headphones.

They call them computer speakers for a reason. It's nice to be able to listen to things on your computer with good sound. You might find yourself getting more of your entertainment from your computer if the sound comes out well enough.

So, the next time you are at the store and you see a great deal on computer speakers, don't think to yourself that your computer already has speakers attached to it. These speakers will be a lot better than those.
